COACHING BY THE EXPERTS: TRACK AND FIELD RUNNING EVENTS-NTSC VIDE by: ATHLETIC INSTITUTE
In this three-videotape series, America`s top coaches introduce the fundamental skills and techniques used in each track and field event. Produced in conjunction with The Athletics Congress (now U.S. Track and Field), the Coaching by the Experts series covers running events, jumping events, and throwing events on separate videotapes. With the help of slow-motion and stop-action photography, all three videos • show athletes how to perform the specific skills and use the correct technique for each event, • point out common mistakes in each event, and • provide drills to correct these mistakes. With former Olympic coaches Leroy Walker, Larry Ellis, Stan Huntsman, and Terry Crawford serving as instructors, this 48-minute video presents teaching segments on sprints, hurdles, relays, middle distances, and long distances. The video begins by demonstrating the essential elements of good sprinting form and starting technique. Next, in the hurdles segment, viewers learn proper technique for the 100-meter men`s hurdles, the 100-meter women`s hurdles, and the intermediate hurdles. The relay segment teaches proper baton exchanges, demonstrating how to pass the stick in both the 400-meter and 1600-meter relay. Finally, the video shows middle and long distance runners how to improve their running mechanics. The video illustrates how to eliminate lateral movement and other sources of wasted energy, and it explains basic race strategies. More Information ... |

COMPLETE BOOK OF JUMPS by: ED JACOBY
Field event coaches Ed Jacoby and Bob Fraley have worked with many world-class and Olympic jumpers. In Complete Book of Jumps, they draw on their combined 60 years of coaching experience to help track and field athletes at all levels of competition improve their jumping technique, training, and performance. The book features clear instruction combined with detailed illustrations for these 4 jumping events: long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault. In Part I, the authors explore mechanical factors common to all jumps, components of the approach run, and strength and power training for jumpers. They share ideas for the development of technique, including • how to avoid flaws that slow the approach, • tips for achieving maximum height at takeoff, • how to use the number of strides to determine runway approach distances, and • 10 plyometric drills to add strength and power specifically for jumping. Part II features event-specific technique and training information. Devoting a chapter to each event, the book analyzes the various phases of each jump from approach to takeoff to landing. Eleven multiple-frame illustrations from the performances of record-setting jumpers help to demonstrate proper technique. Complete Book of Jumps also includes 16 event-specific workouts, 4 for each event. Each workout focuses on a different phase of training—general preparation, specific preparation, power development, and competition. By breaking down each event into its key parts, these training programs help athletes fine-tune their skills and achieve peak performance. An essential resource for coaches and an effective training tool for athletes, Complete Book of Jumps is filled with proven, practical information jumpers need to go higher and farther than the competition. Whether they are running marathons, racing through ocean swims, pedaling over mountains, or competing in triathlons or duathlons, most of these athletes are not content just to finish. Their challenge is to cover the distance with maximum speed. In Endurance Athlete`s Edge, author Marc Evans guides these serious competitors toward high-level fitness, flawless technique, and superior competitive performance. Selected as the USA National Triathlon Team coach and manager in 1989 and 1990, Evans has helped countless athletes move their performance standards ever higher. Through years of working with top athletes, such as Scott Tinley, he has developed a program that produces outstanding results in training and competition. Here, Evans teaches readers the most efficient swimming, cycling, and running techniques through numerous photographs and 50 performance drills. He includes prescriptions for strength training, flexibility, and nutrition, as well as advice for mental training and race preparation.
